MEM-C Undergraduate Offerings

Military Members in STEM

MEM-C encourages military members to apply to our REU and AYRA REU programs. If selected you will be embedded in one of the MEM-C labs for the duration of the program. MEM-C will offer professional-development workshops specifically tailored for our participating veterans and ROTC members and will leverage its industry partnerships and engagement activities to facilitate career transitions for veterans into the technical private sector.

First-Gen Fast Track

MEM-C encourages students from the UW College of Engineering Pathways to Inclusive Excellence program and Washington State 2-year colleges, especially anyone who participates in the LSAMP and MESA programs, to apply to our Summer REU program. If selected, students planning to transfer to UW can participate in the summer before their first year at UW.

Academic-Year Research Accelerator for Undergraduates (AYRA REU) Program

MEM-C offers an Academic-Year Research Accelerator for Undergraduates program (AYRA REU). If selected you will be embedded in one of the MEM-C labs for the academic year. You will work with graduate students and faculty to develop a research project, gain training in relevant techniques and instrumentation, collect data, write-up your results and craft presentations. AYRA students participate in seminars on undergraduate research and professional development, and are also included in MEM-C IRG meetings and seminars.

Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program

If selected, you will be embedded in one of the MEM-C labs for 9 weeks. You will work with a graduate student and faculty to develop a research project, gain training in relevant techniques and instrumentation, and collect data, culminating in a poster summarizing your research results. REU students participate in a weekly seminar on undergraduate research covering topics such as research ethics, writing a research abstract, and making a scientific poster. Students will participate in a weekly materials science special interest group in which they read scientific journals and tour other labs.
