MEM-C graduate students and researchers make up the fabric of our material science research. They ensure our science is answering the questions of the next generation of scientists in the field of quantum materials. Our students and postdocs are a vibrant community of individuals with strong commitment to each other, the spirit of UW, and to the global community. They serve as mentors to our REU students, colleagues to each other, and inspiration to our faculty.
Center coherence is promoted through bi-monthly IRG-wide joint group meetings in each IRG, bi-monthly center-wide joint student/postdoc gatherings, joint supervision of graduate students/postdocs, unified MEM-C-wide outreach activities, center-wide seminars and industry engagement activities, and an annual All-Hands meeting featuring student/postdoc talks, posters, breakout sessions, and professional development training. Additionally, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are the experts of our Shared Facilities (MSF) with designated “superusers” managing the equipment and training new users. The MSF manager is a postoctoral scholar supported by the Center.
MEM-C leads a suite of education/outreach and human-development activities with broad goals for our graduate student research and postdoctoral scholars:
- Providing advanced training in technical and non-technical areas that allows them to develop skills in scholarship, innovation, leadership, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
- Working with partners in international institutions, industry, and national laboratories to equip MEM-C participants with global interdisciplinary research perspectives.
